Vicki Iler has worked for J. Daniel, an Ohio-based Danella company, for 25 years. We talked with Vicki about her start in the construction and rental business, her responsibilities at J. Daniel, and what she wishes people knew.

Vicki, you’ve been with J. Daniel for quite a while now. What drew you to a career in construction?

Well, I can’t say that I was drawn to a career in construction. I think construction found me and my career happened. Prior to J. Daniel, my positions were with semi-truck dealerships that sold trucks to several construction companies. I have always been interested in the equipment that is used in construction. My grandfather was a heavy equipment operator, and I loved watching him and hearing him talk about the industry.

How did you get started with J. Daniel?

I started working with the company in 1994. At the time we had a contract with Sprint United Telephone. I was hired to do all the bookkeeping (payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and anything else that was needed). I was also the assistant to the controller. After a few years of working with her, she decided to leave J. Daniel and start her own CPA business. I was then moved into her position, and I have been here ever since.

You are an Accounting/Office Manager at J. Daniel’s Loveland, Ohio office. What is your day-to-day like?

I do more than just accounting even though that is a huge part [of my job]. I work with the employees assisting them with their benefits packages and engage in the wellness program. I also work with the employees if they have any computer related issues. I manage anything that has to do with the building, like cleaning and scheduling needed maintenance and repair. Working with the sub-contractors I make sure their contracts and insurance are current.

What do you wish our customers and other organizations knew about J. Daniel/Danella?

What sets J. Daniel/Danella apart from other companies is how important safety is. We make it a priority to provide our employees with all the appropriate equipment and knowledge to do their job safely. We want our employees to make it home every day to their families. We take pride in doing a job right and on time.

Do you have any unique activities, hobbies, or events you want to share?

I decided a few years ago that I needed a change in my life. I joined a walking/running group called Fleet Feet with my sister, and we trained to participate in a 5k. I was hooked. Since then I have completed several half marathons including three Cincinnati Flying Pigs, two Cincinnati Queen Bees, the Cincinnati Heart-Mini, the Columbus Children’s Hospital, and several 5k, 10k, and 14ks along the way.
