Congratulations to Kate Howick, Director of Operations in Danella Engineering, who was recently re-elected President by her peers to the Board of Directors of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Space Coast Florida Chapter. Kate’s vision for the chapter has been well received, and they hope to continue the momentum into her second term as Chapter President.
Under her first year of guidance as Chapter President, membership numbers are up over 25%, and sponsorships have doubled. “She’s been working hard to spread the word about NAWIC, getting us more involved in the community, and supporting & promoting the construction trades.” Says Cherly Foley, the Director who serves on the board with Kate.
This energy for the chapter hopes to continue for another year and is sediment echoed by her peers.
- “She is an inspiration for encouragement,” stated board Vice President Terri Hart. “It never matters how much she has going on; she takes the time to genuinely listen and offer concern, ideas, and potential solutions.”
- “Her work in community outreach has definitely raised more awareness of our chapter in Brevard.” Stated Director Donna Skarosi.
- Fellow board Member Terri Kelly cant say enough good things about their new direction. “Kate works hard for our NAWIC Space Coast Chapter. She’s involved and seeks out opportunities to improve our membership with fantastic Professional Development opportunities and speakers at our monthly meetings. She is always concerned about each member, polling their preferences, discussing with the boards about ideas to further champion our cause to strengthen and amplify the success of women in the construction industry.”
Over the past year, the NAWIC Space Coast Chapter has launched several impactful initiatives. These include a collaboration with the Eastern Florida State College Welding program, a mentorship program for young women in college, and the spearheading of a Construction Career Camp for local middle and high schools. These initiatives are a testament to the chapter’s commitment to empowering women in the construction industry.
One of their recent projects includes collaboration with the Make-A-Wish foundation to help lead coordination and fundraising efforts to provide a wheelchair-accessible backyard makeover for a local 3-year-old girl with a rare genetic disease that will allow her to play outside. A story that was recently aired on an Orlando-based news network. They currently have raised almost half of the $25,000 goal.
