History of the Danella Annual Auction: Sale of Used Equipment

The Danella Annual Auction has grown to be one of the best auctions in the Philadelphia region for quality used equipment.

By 1987, the Danella fleet of rental equipment vehicles had grown to between 400 and 500 pieces on rent to customers. As the fleet and the construction operation equipment/vehicles continued to grow, it became apparent that there needed to be a way to rotate the fleet effectively. In 1989, the Danella Annual Auction began.

We are considered one of the best auctions around because our equipment is some of the best-maintained.

“The Rental division’s annual equipment auction used to be considered a ‘junk auction’ when Danella first started. Now, however, we are considered one of the best auctions around because our equipment is some of the best-maintained.” Tom Walsh, Vice President of Operations, stated. “The yearly auction features from 175 to 250 pieces of equipment.”

The rentals team has a lot on their plate each year leading up to the event. Not only does it take time to identify units that should be heading to auction and transporting them back to Danella maintenance facilities, but many units (especially the backhoes) are given some TLC before heading over to the auction yard. Titles, tags, and other paperwork also must be pulled, along with ordering new equipment to replace the old.

“The maintenance done by our mechanic teams is astounding. Rick Huebner and Phil Hickman, with their teams, sometimes seem to accomplish the impossible when it comes to ensuring the equipment and vehicles are ready.” Walsh commented.

In 2020, Danella had to quickly pivot the auction away from an in-person event to a virtual one to ensure the public’s safety. COVID-19 opened up additional opportunities for the auction previously available online but were not as popular with the auction goers.

Due to the success of virtual, and the need to continue to protect our employees, JJ Kane Auctioneers, and the general public, the June 2021 auction will also take place virtually. More details are available online at https://www.danella.com/jj-kane-auction/
